Jørn Utzon’s design of the Sydney Opera House was influenced by his maritime background. He studied naval charts of Sydney Harbour to understand the brief, and his previous background in shipbuilding provided the inspiration for the Sydney Opera House ‘Sails’. The Opera House also has particular significance to me personally, as my father was a civil and structural engineer who worked for Ove Arup and Partners – the company that help transform Utzon’s design into reality. This image attempts to capture the spirit of this iconic building, with 3 bright ships that pass briefly during the night.
