The Banyan tree was imported from India and is not native to Hawaii. It germinates in a host tree and drops its roots down to the ground. A bird for example may drop a seed into the leaves of a palm or other tree, and from there it grows and sends long rope-like roots that gradually thicken and embrace the host tree. Eventually the host dies.
This has resulted in many myths sur...rounding the Banyan tree, including themes of holy union, sacrifice and immortality. Generally the local belief is that Banyans are peaceful resting spots where lost spirits reside, however there are many more sinister beliefs associated with specific trees.
