We came across many stupas in our travels, all representing important focal points for their respective communities. This Stupa in Daocheng was the most grand and elaborate. The type of stupa that is constructed is very much determined by local traditions and history.
Stupas are sacred Buddhist Monuments, with important symbolism. Some represent the 5 purified elements, with the base representing earth, the hemispherical dome - water, the conical spire - fire, the upper lotus parasol and the crescent moon - air, and the sun and the dissolving point represents space.
