Remoteness

Gillespie Beach is a remote beach on the West Coast, South Island, New Zealand. To reach the location involves traversing a muddy narrow rocky dirt road for 12 km in a suitable vehicle. After rain it can be impassable. The beach is renowned for its wild and dangerous surf with waves over 4m at times. There is a sense of paradox when photographing at this location. On one hand it is loud, wet and windy, with waves crashing around you. However, there is also a sense of peace and calm in its isolation and remoteness. I chose to try and express the latter with a 200 second exposure after sunset.
